Emerald beads from old mines are traditionally hand-drilled. In ancient times, without modern drilling machines, artisans drilled from both ends of the stone, leaving slightly uneven centers and sharp edges. To preserve the thread and enhance durability, jewelers historically applied “joban” (oil inside bead holes).
